Eduqas Short Film Inspiration
La Jettée (28 mins)
The whole theme of forbidden or unachievable romance resonates with my short film. Also the 60s clothing and ‘spy’ type element is like Le Samouraï which will have a similar aesthetic to my short.
Connect (5 mins)
I want to use the close up shot of their hands slowly reaching out as one of the very last shots of my film before the twist is revealed. Also as a reference to the taxi scene from In the Mood for Love.
High Maintenance (9 mins)
While the couple talk at the table there are opposing close up side profile shots; mimicking each other and making them look close through framing when actually they’re on opposite sides of the table. This could be used towards the start of my film, where during the second meeting they sit on the same row but opposite ends and then pass in the middle to exchange the message silhouetted by the credits of the film.
Two Cars, One Night (11 mins)
I like the shot where she moves the mirror to look at her face, to link this in with the femme fatale connotations I plan to use a vintage compact mirror at some point for my female character to reapply her lipstick and spot the spy in the background (difficult but will look effective as another opening shot to the meeting.)
The focus push from the ring she’s holding on the dashboard to her face looking down at it is also really cool and can definitely inspire some of the close ups I plan to use.
Meshes of the Afternoon (14 mins)
I could definitely use the noir elements of this film to inspire my 60s set short film; such as the glazed eyes, the use of shadows that interact with reality and the reoccurring motifs that will be my postcards for the spy’s next location.
Curfew (19 mins)
Warm but dark and moody colour grading and red motif to show ‘the end’- death, danger, hopelessness etc. I’m considering using a colour the characters choose to wear to find each other in the audience each time, so it’d make sense for the last colour to be red to match to show their short lasting comfort in the cinema as it matches but also to connote danger.
